People do not know enough about communist dictatorships - By Rudin Dakli

Since we came to Canada more than 20 years ago, one of the most common questions has been around Albania and the communist regime, why it was called the blank spot of Europe and what exactly happened there.
I know "1984" is one the books studied as part of some curriculums in high schools, and most of the people have a vague idea on what exactly a communist dictatorship was about. But few of them have ever encountered people who have lived “1984” in real life.
Butterflies is a documentary depicting lives of 21, now women, but then young girls suffering the wrath of the insanity and cruelty of the regime.
People are more sensitive about fascism and nazism, because it did make a lot of noise on its path of destruction. Communist dictatorships were worst!
However, they did cause atrocities silently, but in the aftermath of that long period of time, the suffering, destruction and sorrow it left in the countries it dominated, sometimes surpassed that of fascism.
This is what this movie we bringing to Toronto is all about. The silent genocide, not condemned enough nowadays. Because people do not know enough!
