Erion Veliaj në Toronto - Peticion proteste nga një grup shqiptaro-kanadezësh

Nga data 10 deri më 13 tetor 2023, në Toronto do të zhvillohet sesioni i 5-të i Urban Economy Forum. Ky Forum është një nismë globale që synon adresimin e sfidave komplekse ekonomike me të cilat përballen zonat urbane në mbarë botën. Forumi ofron një platformë për politikëbërësit, ekspertët dhe drejtuesit për të diskutuar çështje të tilla si pabarazia, papunësia, ndryshimet klimatike dhe deficitet e infrastrukturës. Organizata njeh rëndësinë e qyteteve si qendra për aktivitetin ekonomik, inovacionin dhe zhvillimin, veçanërisht ndërsa bota vazhdon të urbanizohet. Ky forum pra, është një OJF që mbështetet nga disa OJF të ngjashme si dhe nga UN-Habitat.

Në këtë aktivitet figuron si pjesëmarrës dhe kryetari Bashkisë së Tiranës që do të jetë një nga keynote speakers.

Nëse konsulton faqen internet të forumit në fjalë konstatohet që aty do marrin pjesë disa kryetarë bashkish të nivelit të dytë të Ontarios dhe asnjë kryetar bashkie nga metropolet kryesore të Kanadasë si Toronto, Montreal apo Vancouver. Nëse krahason p.sh. panelin pjesëmarrës të Toronto Global Forum, që zhvillohet në të njëjtat ditë në Toronto dhe ku marrin pjesë disa ministra të rëndësishëm të qeverisë kanadeze, është e lehtë të nxirren konkluzione. Sepse sigurisht dikush, do tentojë ta propagandojë pjesëmarrjen e Veliajt në një takim rutinë aktivistësh të mjedisit në Toronto, si sukses i kryetarit të bashkisë së Tiranës, që në fakt do mbetet në histori përveç të tjerash, edhe si shkatërruesi i Teatrit Kombëtar.

Kjo është hera e dytë që Veliaj vjen në Kanada si kryetar bashkie i Tiranës. Herën e parë thuajse inkonjito në Montreal, në qershor 2018, madje për këtë vizitë Flasshqip.ca pat botuar dhe një artikull të posaçëm, ku tërhiqte vëmendjen për moskomunikimin e Ambasadës në Ottawa me mediat shqiptaro-kanadeze, për të qarkulluar një informacion me interes për shqiptarët që jetojnë në Kanada dhe jo vetëm. Taksapaguesit e Tiranës duhet ta dine saktë motivin e shpenzimeve të çdo udhëtimi zyrtar të të zgjedhurit të tyre.

Për ardhjen nesër (10.10.) në Toronto të Veliajt, thuajse e njëjta situatë, asnjë informacion paraprak zyrtar. Sigurisht, kanë kaluar 5 vjet qysh nga viti 2018 dhe bëmat e shkatërruesit të Teatri Kombëtar janë shtuar. Plus kësaj, Ambasada e “Rilindjes” në Ottawa, kishte dhe një eksperiencë të “hidhur” me vizitën e anuluar të Edi Ramës në Toronto, në vitin 2019, për të cilën pati një reagim kritik nga një grup anëtarësh të komunitetit, të cilët patën përgatitur edhe një protestë para hotelit ku do të zhvillohej Toronto Global Forum atë vit. Disa emra të shquar të komunitetit refuzuan publikisht dhe ftesën e dërguar nga ambasada, për darkë zyrtare me kryeministrin, duke e ftuar kryeministrin të takohej drejpërdrejt me shqiptarët e Torontos.

Kësaj radhe, lajmi për ardhjen e Veliajt u shpërnda përmes rrjeteve sociale, pas informacionit që qarkulloi rreth një ftese që ishte dërguar në mënyrë selektive për të njoftuar një pritje të organizuar nesër, 10 tetor 2023, nga Ambasada Shqiptare në Kanada dhe ku njoftohet prezenca e Kryetarit të Bashkisë së Tiranës.

I pari që reagoi publikisht për këtë fakt ishte Nador Bakalli, aktivist i diasporës në Toronto. “Me datë 10 Tetor ështe lajmëruar një aktivitet në Toronto me prezencën e kryetarit të Bashkisë Tiranë, Erion Veliaj. Pa dashur t’u mungoj në respekt organizatorëve, prezenca e Veliajt midis komunitetit tonë në Toronto, është një ofendim i rëndë i vlerave demokratike dhe, më e rëndësishmja, atyre njerëzore. Të nderuar miq të komunitetit, fotot dhe buzëqeshjet me Veliajn rëndojnë fort mbi shpatulla. Disa gjëra nuk duhen harruar… Mos harroni shembjen barbare të Teatrit Kombëtar! Mos harroni kullëzimin e kryeqytetit dhe mafien e betonit!”, thuhej ndër të tjera në prononcimin publik në rrjetin Facebook të Bakallit.

Pas këtij reagimi është hartuar dhe një peticion të cilin e kanë firmosur deri në momentin e publikimit të këtij lajmi 63 anëtarë të komunitetit shqiptaro-kanadez me banim në disa qytetet të Kanadasë si Toronto, Ottawa dhe Montreal (firmosja vazhdon ende). Peticioni do t’i dërgohet zyrtarisht organizatorëve të aktivitetit Urban Economy Forum. Ndërkohë, nuk kanë munguar dhe thirrjet në adresë të të ftuarve nga ambasada për ta bojkotuar takimin me kryebashkiakun e Tiranës, të përfolur për shumë afera korruptive, përfshi dhe skandalin e inceneratorëve.

Kanë vijuar po ashtu dhe komentet polarizuese apo negative në rrjete (pa perjashtuar dhe mediat proqeveritare të Tiranës) duke pretenduar se ata që kanë firmosur peticionin, po flasin kundër atdheut dhe një personi të zgjedhur me votë të lirë, ndërkohë kur dihet se cili është standardi i zgjedhjeve në Shqipëri.

Flasshqip.ca, media e pavarur, kujton se e drejta e peticionit është një e drejtë demokratike dhe ata që e kanë firmosur peticionin, sigurisht nuk e identifikojnë atdheun me politikanin e radhës në bashki, apo kryeministri.

Subject: Protest the Presence of Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj at the Urban Economy Forum.

Dear Ms. Canelas and Mr. Green,

We hope this letter finds you well. We are writing to express our deep concern and dismay regarding the scheduled appearance of Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj at the upcoming Urban Economy Forum. It is our firm belief that Mayor Veliaj's presence at such a prestigious event not only tarnishes the reputation of the forum but also sends a highly troubling message about the values it upholds.

Mayor Veliaj's tenure as the Mayor of Tirana has been marked by a series of deeply concerning allegations and actions that have raised serious questions about his fitness for public office and his commitment to the principles of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. Some of the key issues that warrant our strong protest are as follows:

Involvement in numerous financial scandals: chief of all a massive scheme with a non-existent or ghost waste incinerator. There have been credible allegations of Mayor Veliaj's involvement in the approval and operation of a non-existent ghost incinerator in Tirana. Several arrests have been made on this issue and there is an ongoing investigation involving several officials. These incinerators not only pose a grave environmental risk but have also led to a gross misappropriation of public funds. The Municipality of Tirana has spent Millions of dollars in funding and supporting a non-existent incinerator, with sums totalling over $100,000/day for months on end. Such actions directly contradict the principles of responsible urban management and sustainable development, which the Urban Economy Forum seeks to promote.

Cultural and architectural genocide: Under Veliaj’s administration, a brutal demolition of historic and cultural landmark has taken place that has transformed the city into a massive concrete hub. Europa Nostra and the European Union have both denounced the brutal demolition of a designated heritage monument like the National Theatre of Albania in the middle of a pandemic by this mayor. He brought out the bulldozers at 4:00 AM on a Sunday to demolish and destroy the landmark building while people were still in the building, risking a massive catastrophe.

Mafia Association: Mayor Veliaj has faced accusations of having close ties to organized crime figures. He is personally named in tapped phone calls and transcripts between mafia associates, where Tirana is mentioned as the capital of money laundering in Europe. These allegations undermine the trust that citizens should have in their elected leaders and raise questions about the integrity of the political system in Tirana. They also create a hostile environment that hinders economic development and progress.

Abusive landfill practices that led to the death of a minor: The tragic, untimely and brutal death of a minor under questionable circumstances has cast a dark shadow on Mayor Veliaj's administration. 17-year-old Ardit Gjoklaj was brutally murdered while being illegally employed in the landfill of Sharra, in Tirana, the main landfill in the city under the administration of the Municipality of Tirana. The lack of a thorough and impartial investigation into this incident has eroded public confidence in the mayor's ability to ensure the safety and well-being of our community's most vulnerable members. Media investigations have uncovered that the mayor has met several times with the prosecutor’s office handling this investigation and there is credible evidence that the investigation itself was grossly mismanaged.

Corruption: There have been numerous allegations of corruption within Mayor Veliaj's administration, ranging from the misuse of public funds to favoritism in awarding contracts and building permits. These allegations, if true, demonstrate a blatant disregard for the principles of transparency and accountability that are essential for fostering a healthy urban economy.

Running one of the most polluted cities in Europe: Since he became Mayor of Tirana, green spaces in the city have shrunk massively. Currently there are 0.8 m2 of green space per capita in Tirana, which is way below the European standards requiring a minimum of 7m2 per capita.

Tirana is also one of Europe's most polluted cities, where AQHI (air quality health index) is (greater than) >7 (high risk) in ∼ 200 days/ year. In 2020, roughly 23 percent of deaths in Albania were caused by air pollution (2nd highest in Europe for pollution-related deaths).

Given these serious concerns, we believe that Mayor Erion Veliaj's participation in the Urban Economy Forum is not only inappropriate but also detrimental to the reputation and credibility of the event itself. We urge you to reconsider his invitation to the forum and take a stand against those who undermine the values it seeks to promote.

We hope that the Urban Economy Forum remains a platform for open and honest discussions about urban development, economic growth, and sustainable practices. Inviting individuals with questionable records and allegations of wrongdoing sends a damaging message about the forum's commitment to these ideals.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we hope that you will take our concerns into account as you make decisions regarding the participation of public officials in your event.

P.S. We would like to bring to your attention that 4 years earlier, in September 2019, many Albanian Intellectuals signed a petition/letter sent to the President of the Toronto Economic Forum and the organizers, lobbying for the cancellation of the visit of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama due to gross mismanagement, organized crime association and massive wrongdoings with his government. You should be aware that the former Minister of the Environment in Albania is now was sentenced and is now serving a 6 year and 8 months prison sentence on corruption charges with his involvement with the above-mentioned incinerator in which Mr. Veliaj is heavily wrapped up with.

Mr. Rama’s visit to the forum was indeed cancelled…
